Seal Sands - Nature Reserve

There is no vehicular access to Seal Sands, but there are 3 points to park and then walk 10-15 minutes to the edge of the mudflats.  The best option is to park in the newly refurbished car park at Cowpen Marsh (NZ507252), on the West side of the A178 Port Clarence-Seaton Carew road and just South of the Greatham Creek road bridge.  From here one can walk to the Creek bridge, turn right (East) and walk along the South bank of Greatham Creek to the Seal Sands hide.

Another option is to park on the roadside North of the Creek bridge and walk East along the North bank of Greatham Creek to what’s known as the Greenabella wall.  Turning left (North) along this wall beside the mudflats eventually brings one to a small crude hide close to Graythorp dock.

The third option involves parking at the East end of Zinc Works Road, walking East to Seaton Snook, then turning right (South) to view Seal Sands across the Seaton Channel.  This is usually the coldest option in winter!

Seaton Carew Town Centre, Attractions and Beach

A splendid promenade connects the Marina with one of the Victorian’s favourite North-East resorts. Seaton Carew with its miles of broad golden sands and safe sheltered bathing is still the perfect venue for a traditional family day out at the seaside. Enjoy good flat beaches to fly kites and build castles, rock pools to hunt shrimps and amusement arcades that flicker and sing – Seaton Carew is well worth visiting when you stay in Hartlepool.

AS our main pictures show, Hartlepool has miles of golden sands – its possible to walk along several miles of clean, golden sand from the edge of Hartlepool Marina to the Tees Estuary and the Blue lagoon beach . . . and enjoy every minute of it.

If you are lucky you will be able to watch seals basking just a few yards offshore or enjoy some fantastic sand dunes. If you want to wind surf, jog, fly a kite or just go for a pleasant stroll, Hartlepool’s beaches take some beating.

Along the main front at Seaton you’ll find a choice of restaurants, fish and chips, burgers, candy floss and amusement arcades.

Warm summer days continue to attract many visitors to the resort’s spotless beach, arcades, and fish and chip restaurants. Every November a fireworks display and carnival attracts thousands of visitors from across the region to celebrate Bonfire Night. There is live music and fairground rides on the Saturday which falls closest to Bonfire Night, November 5.

Numerous buildings around The Green are grade II listed and the sea front bus station has a recently renovated grade II listed art deco clock tower. One mile south of Seaton Carew is Hartlepool nuclear power station. Seaton Carew’s coastline is the location of the Hartlepool Submerged Forest, a site of special scientific interest.

Seaton Carew Golf Course

Seaton Carew Golf Club has held golf games since 1874 making it the tenth oldest golf club in England. The club is based in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool on the North Sea coast, north of the River Tees in North East England. When it was first established it was the only golf club in the English counties of Yorkshire and Durham, hence its original name Durham and Yorkshire Golf Club; the club's crest and badge retain the emblems of both the Archbishop of Durham and the Archbishop of York.

As more golf clubs were coming into being, particularly in North Yorkshire and County Durham, the club's committee and members decided the old title was no longer apt and the name of Seaton Carew Golf Club was adopted in 1887. By the end of the 19th century the links was already regarded as one of the English game's premier golfing locations. In the 1888-89 Golfing Annual the course was described as being of "sandy nature, covered with soft velvet turf that springs under one's foot and rejuvenates the aged" and was also featured in The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News which even in 1894 stated that "in the opinion of visitors that between St Andrews and Sandwich there are few better rounds on the east coast than Seaton Carew." The course has since featured in many golf publications and reviews. Seaton Carew is frequently referred to as one of the most challenging links golf courses anywhere in the British Isles. In 2009 the "Sky News" reporter Graeme Bailey said of his visit to these links "Seaton Carew has everything any golfer would want, but most importantly it is a course which could stand shoulder to shoulder with anything in Britain."

Seaton Carew Golf Club was one of the earliest golf clubs in the UK to elect a lady captain of the club. Jane Longhorn was appointed in December 2010 and served the club as captain throughout 2011. Longhorn was the first lady to be elected as captain in the club's 136-year history.
